Bacci

Born in Peru, in 1952, Jesus Bacci is one of a group of extraordinary landscape painters to emerge during the last two decades. Since the advent of the Cuzco School of painting in the 17th century, Peru has been traditionally a country of figure painters. However, a move toward landscape painting, commanded in part by Bamse Antunez de Mayolo, commenced in the 1970s. Bacci was part of this group of artists who began painting their local surroundings, and their success generated a demand that allowed them to travel, and resulted in a renewed popular interest in landscape painting.

Bacci came to Lima to study painting in the famous School of Fine Arts in 1969. He was well known for his defense of the traditional landscape, and he initially encountered enough opposition to his penchant for landscapes that he considered dropping out of school several times. He eventually triumphed and ended up graduating with the highest honors. Despite such early difficulties in his career, Bacci's work quickly became in demand, and he rapidly became one of the best-known and most popular artists in the genre. His work is collected throughout the United States and Latin America.
